Getting ready for your experiment

This section describes the important steps to perform before starting any experiments using Revontuli.

Please strictly follow the explicit safety rules and proper procedure below to avoid personal and/or material damage!

Component and material check

• cable check
• component check (motors status, controller status, detector status)
• switching ON X-ray tube cooling fans

Radiation safety check

• radiation safety important knowledge (meaning of lights, interlock system)
• reminder of having your personal dosimeter
• description of safety procedure and what to do in case of emergency
• disconnect X-ray tube when not in use

Setting up the experiment log book

Zulip chat is used for digital logging of experiments. The program can be used on the web from c4xs.zulipchat.com. You will need a Zulip account and an invitation to use the chat instance.

In the Zulip interface, the logs can be found on the left sidebar under the "Instruments" category → "Experimental logs" channel → "Revontuli" topic. The logs can be written in this topic thread as messages, which are identified by the (unique) experiment ID. The chat thread is searchable. The messages are written in the markdown format, and different attachments, such as images, can be added to each message.

To create a new entry in the log book, head to the "Revontuli" thread, and on the bottom of the page, click on the message box (don't create a new topic). Write the experiment ID as a heading (e.g., in bold) in the first message. Write your log entries as messages in the thread. They will be grouped by user and date.
